ICNP® Leadership for Change ™
Professional Practice Program Area: Overview
In professional practice ICN's current focus is in the following areas: Leadership Development, creation of an International Classification of Nursing Practice, and Linkages.
Leadership Development
Leadership is a common theme in all organisations today, and it is a long-standing concern for ICN. Over the years ICN has initiated many projects to prepare nurses for leadership. Today our initiatives are two pronged - one addressing knowledge and skills to lead in an era of reform Leadership for Change ™ and the second focusing on leading through skills in negotiation Negotiation in Leadership.
International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®)
An exciting and historic ICN initiative is the development of an international classification for nursing practice (ICNP®) to be used worldwide for practice, education, research and management purposes. The ICNP® provides a structured and defined vocabulary and unifying framework in which existing vocabularies and classifications can be entered to enable comparison of nursing data. Considered a landmark project, the ICNP® will contribute greatly to describing nursing practice and monitoring global trends in nursing care. This common language will allow nurses to compare nursing data across clinical populations, settings, geographic areas and time and to document the outcomes of nursing interventions.
Linkages
ICN's ever-increasing networks and connections to people reinforce the importance of strong linkages with national, regional and international nursing and non-nursing organisations. Building positive relationships internationally helps position ICN, nurses and nursing for now and the future. Our work with the specialised agencies of the United Nations system, particularly with WHO and the International Labour Organisation, are important for nurses everywhere. In addition, we work closely with the International Red Cross, UNICEF, Amnesty International and a whole range of international non governmental organisations.
